LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn Athletics will participate in Giving Tuesday, an annual philanthropic event aimed at encouraging generosity in communities, taking place on Tuesday, December 1.
Alumni, fans, and donors have the opportunity to support a sport of their choice or make a direct contribution to Alcorn Athletics beginning Tuesday morning. Supporters can donate to athletics by clicking here for the fundraising website or texting 'GOBRAVES' to 71777 on mobile devices. A printable pledge form can be filled out by clicking here.
"The COVID-19 pandemic created a financial crisis that we have not seen in college athletics. We have had to take the unprecedented steps, which includes reducing operating expenses significantly and is why your support at this crucial time is greatly appreciated," said Derek Horne, director of athletics. "Every gift will make an immediate impact on the future athletic and academic success of our student-athletes."
Alcorn Athletics launched the Brave Strong, Drive for Athletics initiative in November with a goal of raising $170,000. The funds will help offset the cost of travel, apparel, equipment, and more.
Alcorn is coming off a great year, both athletically and academically. In 2019-20, Alcorn won 22 SWAC Player of the Week awards as an athletic department in the shortened year. The football team won its second consecutive SWAC Championship and fourth in the last six years. The Braves are also the six-time defending SWAC East Division champions.
In the classroom, more than half of the student-athletes earned SWAC Honor Roll, with 149 student-athletes scoring above a 3.0 GPA. Alcorn graduated 73 student-athletes (31 in the fall, 42 in the spring), and 65 student-athletes scored a semester 4.0 GPA in the fall and/or spring.
