Braves Make a Statement at the KMS Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Alcorn State University men's and women's track programs had improvements across the board at the KMS Open at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday.

Second-year head coach Jimmy Joseph is happy with the team's focus over the last two weeks and it culminated with solid team performance.

"I'm very pleased with the performances across the board. We started great and kept the momentum throughout the meet," stated coach Joseph.

Freshman Christian Franklin continues his rookie campaign by shattering the previous 5000m school record of 16:27.37 with his mark of 15:50.31. Franklin teamed with Elijah Anderson, Charles Nnathah Jr., and Peterson Saint-Cyrin in the distance medley relay that finished fourth with a conference-leading time.

Senior Bralon Robinson advanced through three rounds of the 60-meter dash to finish 8th in the final. Robinson ran his season's best time of 6.77 in the semifinals. Junior JaKobe Rogers and Freshman Arrington Robinson competed in the semifinals with Bralon. Jakobe and Arrington both achieved season-best times.

Sophomore Khiah Williams runner-up in the women's long jump led the Lady Braves but Williams is hungry for more. Khiah was leading the event going into the final before she was surpassed by a professional athlete.

"Second place is the first to lose, which makes me have to work harder each day at practice," stated Khiah.

Williams was also one of four Lady Braves to advance to a semifinal in Sunday's competition, joining graduate student Shameka Grover in the 60-meters while Freshman Akili Pleas-Carnie and Senior Dekari Courtney ran the 60-meter hurdles. Freshman Samouya Nevers posted a 20 second personal best in the mile with a time of 5:38.

The men's and women's track programs have two weeks until they return to action at the SWAC Indoor Championships on February 18th and 19th. Coach Joseph feels his team is moving in the right direction heading into the postseason.

"I'm very excited about this group and I look forward to having success this season," said coach Joseph.
