LORMAN, Miss. – Prior to departing for the SWAC Championships on Wednesday morning, six student-athletes from the Alcorn State University track & field program were given their hard-earned degrees inside the Roy Johnson Assembly Room, surrounded by family and friends.
Â
"Despite the unprecedented circumstances of competing at the highest level in the middle of a global pandemic, these six individuals embodied what it meant to be BRAVE. They not only went above and beyond on the track but also in the classroom with all earning Cum Laude or higher. These student-athletes should be applauded for their determination to represent Alcorn with the utmost class and respect," said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Derek Horne.
Â
Since they are unable to be involved in the Spring Commencement Exercise to be held Saturday at Spinks-Casem Stadium (9 a.m.), five Braves runners made their way across the sea of masks and theater seats to receive their degree while one Lady Brave was honored as well.
Â
"I am proud of the commitment of our student-athletes and coach to both academic pursuits as well as competitiveness in their sport," said Assistant Vice President for Athletic Compliance and Academic Services
Cyrus K. Russ. "Each student-athlete recognized during this special ceremony graduated with honors. It is our mission that Alcorn student-athletes receive the resources and experiences during their academic and athletic journey that will prepare them for the next 40 years of their lives."
Each of the six student-athletes left "The Reservation" with the highest of honors as two graduated Cum Laude, three were Suma Cum Laude and the other was Magna Cum Laude.
"It was an honor and a privilege to have coached such remarkable student-athletes," Head Men's and Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Coach
Jimmy Joseph said. "They all succeed in the classroom and on the track. I hope they continue to be a gift and an inspiration in their next endeavors."
