Lady Braves Travel to Southeastern Louisiana

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State softball team takes a break from conference play, traveling to Hammond, La. Tuesday to take on Southeastern Louisiana University in a doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m. at North Oak Park.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the game will not be televised, but the live stats can be viewed on the Alcorn Sports and the SLU Athletics websites.

The Braves enter the midweek contest with an 11-18 overall record after a 3-0 weekend versus conference-rival Grambling State, securing its three-game series sweep of the 2022 season. Alcorn State defeated the Tigers 11-3 in five innings on Friday, 8-2 on Saturday, and 6-0 on Sunday. Brenn Ursin, the graduate pitcher, issued her second shutout of the season, throwing the complete game with just four hits against and five strikeouts.

Kristian Edwards leads the offensive charge for ASU, hitting .345 with 29 hits, 18 runs scored, and 18 stolen bases on the year. Edwards is one of five Alcorn players currently hitting .300 or higher on the season, as she is joined by Desirea Lindsey (.317), Genise Wells (.312), Kelsey Lockridge (.316), and Marsha Hunt (.300). Wells had a terrific weekend against Grambling, as she scored four runs with five hits, including a home run over the weekend. Edwards, a redshirt sophomore, had three runs, four RBIs, and eight hits.

It was a team effort for the Braves this weekend in the circle. The three starting pitchers completed their respective games. Lexi Veamoi threw a shortened 5.0-inning contest against the Tigers Friday night. She saw six hits against, three runs (one earned), one walk, and a career-high six strikeouts in the 11-3 victory. In game two, Kiri Parker took over pitching duties with six hits against, two runs (one earned), three walks, and a career-high eight strikeouts. Alcorn defeated Grambling 8-2. Ursin pitched on Sunday in the shutout.

SLU enters the contest with an 18-10 record on the season. The Lions just completed preconference road play with a 4-0 loss to ULM. Aeriyl Mass and Madisen Blackford collected one hit each in the matchup. Cam Goodman leads the Lions' offense with a .429 batting average, and Heather Zumo carries the team in the circle with a 10-3 record and a 2.28 ERA.
