Box Score 3 LORMAN, Miss. – The Lady Braves softball team went 2-1 in the weekend contests to top Southern --University in the three-game conference series. After losing the opening competition 3-1, Alcorn bounced back to defeat the Jaguars 7-6 and 7-0. With the series behind them, the Lady Braves move to 13-21 overall and 6-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Southern falls to 9-22 and 7-5 in the league.
GAME ONE (L, 3-1)
The Lady Braves began the series on Friday with a doubleheader at the Alcorn Softball Complex. The competition got off to a slow start, and it was not until the bottom of the fourth inning that the first run was scored. Marsha Hunt singled to left field to score Desirea Lindsey for Alcorn's only run.
The Jaguars answered in the top of the fifth with Julia York scoring an unearned run on an error by the Lady Braves' centerfielder.
The score remained tied at 1 until the top of the seventh inning when York doubled to centerfield to bring home Christina Mayer to give Southern a 2-1 advantage. The Jaguars extended their lead to a final score of 3-1 on a single by Londyn Lau that scored Paytin Mercado.
Lexi Veamoi (3-8) pitched the entire contest for five hits against, three runs (two earned), one walk, and five strikeouts.
GAME TWO (W, 7-6)
Alcorn State came back strong in the second game of the day to split the doubleheader. The Lady Braves collected nine hits for seven runs and committed five errors. The Jaguar bats were hotter than Alcorn with 12 hits, but the Lady Braves' defense held them to six runs.
At the plate, Kristian Edwards had a 2-for-4 showing with one double, one triple, and two runs. Tyesha Cole also had a 2-for-4 outing with one double for an RBI and two runs. Amari Ramsey hit Alcorn's only home run of the day, clearing the bases for a grand slam and four RBI.
Ta'Niyah Fletcher (2-2) took over pitching duties in the fifth inning for the win. She pitched 3.0 innings for two hits against, no runs, and one strikeout.
GAME THREE (W, 7-0)
The Lady Braves closed out the series on Saturday with their sixth shutout of the season. Alcorn recorded 10 hits in the contest with seven runs while holding Southern scoreless with just two hits.
Kristian Edwards led the Lady Braves at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs. Tyesha Cole hit a home run for two RBIs, and Chloey Morgan had a 2-for-3 appearance with one run.
Brenn Ursin occupied the circle for the entire game for two hits against and two strikeouts.
Cole's home run started the scoring effort in the bottom of the first inning, bringing in two runners. A sacrifice fly by Amari Ramsey extended Alcorn's lead to 3-0.
The Lady Braves added three runs in the third, scoring on an error, a single by Kiri Parker, and a fielder's choice.
Alcorn scored its final run in the sixth. Marsha Hunt singled to the right field to bring Edwards home.
UP NEXT
The Lady Braves will take a break from conference play, traveling to the University of Memphis for midweek action. Alcorn will face the Tigers on Wednesday, April 6, in a doubleheader. The first pitch is at 3 p.m.
