LORMAN, Miss. – Freshman field athlete Zayne Palomino will represent the Alcorn State University track and field team at the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships east preliminary round will take place May 25-May 28 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective events earn a berth into the NC AA East Preliminary Round. The Kingston, Jamaica native qualified for the regional competition in the high jump after reaching a height of 2.12 meters (6 feet, 11.5 inches) at the Southern Miss Invite earlier in the season to rank 27th.
"I've been working hard this whole year, and I feel like its kind of expected with the amount of hard work I've been doing in practice and the time I spend off the track trying to perfect my craft," said Palomino of becoming a regional qualifier. "My goal for this is to make top-12 and qualify for nationals."
The current top 12 in the region are reaching 2.18m – 2.30m which is just a couple of inches greater than Palomino's personal record. "I've been doing track since first grade," he said of his motivation to continue through adversity. "I started high jump in the seventh grade, and I've been improving every year. I just love it. There's never a thought of, 'I don't want to do it anymore.' I just keep pushing myself to be better."
Palomino will compete on Friday, May 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Haugh Track and Field Complex, located on the campus of Indiana University. General information, tickets, schedule, and the live stream can be accessed on the NCAA and Hoosiers websites.
