Women’s Basketball Releases 2022-23 Schedule

Kilbert’s Braves welcome 13 different opponents to Lorman

LORMAN, Miss. – Under the watchful eye of Head Coach Nate Kilbert, entering into his third year at the helm in Lorman, Mississippi, the Alcorn Women's Basketball team unveiled its 2022-23 schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 28. This year's schedule sees the Braves welcome a total of 13 different opponents to the Davey L. Whitney Complex in the form of home games throughout the campaign.

While it may have appeared as if Alcorn Women's Basketball took a step back in 2021-22, the signs of "learn and adjust" were there for veteran Kilbert and his staff – and more importantly, his team. With 10 of the first 12 games played away from home, the old term "road warriors" certainly fit for the Braves. In fact, Alcorn played in eight different states across the first two months a season ago.

In 2022-23, Alcorn plays the first three games away from home when the Braves travel to Tulsa (Nov. 7) to open the slate, followed by stops at Wichita State (Nov. 9) and Big 10 opponent Illinois (Nov. 13).

Once returning from playing the Illini, the Purple and Gold enjoy three consecutive games inside the friendly confines of the Davey L. Whitney Complex, beginning with a visit from Arkansas Baptist (Nov. 16). The University of New Orleans comes to town just before Thanksgiving on Tuesday, Nov. 22, with Central Arkansas visiting "The Reservation" a week later (Nov. 29).

The Braves play just a single home game in the month of December, while four road games are on the docket during the festive holiday month.

Alcorn travels to Louisiana Tech (Dec. 3), before returning to the Davey L. Whitney Complex to host Tougaloo (Dec. 13). After that, three games in a span of six days on the road ensues, with the Braves making stops at PAC-12 opponent Colorado (Dec. 16), ULM (Dec. 19) and UAB (Dec. 21), respectfully.

The Braves open Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play at home, welcoming in-state opponent Jackson State to town on Monday, Jan. 2. The two Alabama schools arrive to Lorman for league games in the form of Alabama A&M (Jan. 7) and Alabama State (Jan. 9), before the Purple and Gold travel to the two Lone Star State schools at Texas Southern (Jan. 14) and Prairie View A&M (Jan. 16), respectively.

SWAC newcomers Florida A&M (Jan. 21) and Bethune-Cookman (Jan. 23) visit the Davey L. Whitney Complex towards the close of the month, before the Braves venture back on the road across the southern border into Louisiana to face-off against Southern (Jan. 28) and Grambling State (Jan. 30).

The month of February has traditionally been a "crunch time" of year for many schools in collegiate hoops, and it proves true for the Braves this season, as Alcorn welcomes Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Feb. 4) and Mississippi Valley State (Feb. 6) to town to kick off the month. After that, a return trip to the Sunshine State and visits to Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 11) and Florida A&M (Feb. 13) occur just before the Braves travel to Jackson State (Feb. 18).

Prairie View A&M (Feb. 25) and Texas Southern (Feb. 27) wrap-up an extremely busy February month.

Alcorn will close out the 2022-23 regular season portion of the women's basketball schedule when traveling to in-state foe Mississippi Valley State (March 2), followed by a bus ride over to Arkansas-Pine Bluff (March 4).

The 2022-23 SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament takes place March 8-11, in Birmingham, Alabama.

In very-much an "adjustment" 2021-22 season for Alcorn Women's Basketball, the Purple and Gold earned key road wins at Prairie View A&M and Alabama A&M, respectfully. It was Zn'Nyia White who finished ranked 24th in the SWAC for total scoring with 213 points (9.7 per game) under her belt. In addition to White's scoring prowess, teammates Maya Claytor and Tyginae Wright each ended the campaign amongst the top 20 players in the league for three-point field goals per game. Claytor averaged 1.3 per game, while Wright contributed with 1.1 per contest.

Meanwhile, distributing the ball was never a problem for Kilbert's side either, as Cayla Obillo was ranked 21st in the SWAC for assists with an average of 2.1 assists per game.
