LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University Lady Braves soccer team went head-to-head with Alabama State University on Friday night and came out victorious, 3-1. The win moves the Lady Braves to 4-10, overall, and 2-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play. Sophomore forward
Samara Nunn dazzled with two goals on the night.
After the win, head coach
Jenna Wallace commented on how much effort the team put in for the win, the team's hunger for victory, and how it is important for the team to focus.
"It was a solid team win. As we near the end of regular season, there is an extra spark in the group that has been missing," said Wallace. "We are hungry, and we started to come together in attacking tonight. It was exciting to watch but we must lock in and focus on Sunday."
The first goal of the game came when Nunn streaked up the field with an assist from
Jailyn Ward in the 24th minute, 1-0. Alabama State (1-10-2, 0-4-1 SWAC) answered back with a goal at the 64th minute when Katelyn Walerczyk scored off an assist from Kensley Simmons to knot the score at 1-1. The Lady Braves thundered back with a goal at the 69th minute from
Charlie Bal with
Ha'Teya Holloman on the the assist. Nunn sealed the game for Alcorn with an assist from
Jaidyn Matheu at the 88th minute, 3-1.
Paula Argelaguet was in the goal for the Lady Braves and snapped up the win with 12 saves on the night. Alabama State's Lauryn Starwood suffered the loss with 12 saves and three goals allowed.

Briana Johnson picked yellow cards. The Lady Hornets' Chase Lewis also received a yellow card.
Alcorn State will take to the pitch again on Sunday, Oct. 15 against the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Spinks-Casem Stadium.
