Braves Runners to Compete at NCAA Cross Country South Regional Championship

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University men and women's cross country has four runners headed to the 2023 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I South Regional Championship in Gainesville, Fla. on Friday, Nov. 10. Stella Kiptui, Teresa Gallegos, Kelvin Kipkemboi, and Alocius Kipngetich will represent Alcorn in the regional meet. 
 
            Kiptui has led the Lady Braves cross country team for the 2023 season with her stellar performances. The senior runner finished first in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Cross-Country Championship (5k) with a time of 18:23.1 and placed first in the Nicholls Cross-Country Invitational (5k) with a time of 18:22.7. Kiptui also had a second-place finish in the Watson Collegiate Cross-Country Classic (6k) with a time of 21:56.1. With her times, she was named 2023 SWAC Women's Cross-Country Runner of the Year and picked for the All-SWAC First Team.
 
            Gallegos earned her spot on the All-SWAC First Team being a pace setter for the Lady Braves. She finished in fifth place at the SWAC Championship with a time of 19:56.6 and in fourth place at the Nicholls Invitational with a time of 19:26.4. Gallegos also had a top 20 finish at the Watson Collegiate Classic with a time of 23:53.9.
 
            On the men's side, Kipkemboi has been the man to beat for the season. The sophomore runner crossed the finish line in first at the SWAC Championship (8k) with a time of 26:16.4. He also finished first at the Nicholls Invitational (6k) with a time of 19:26.4 and the Watson Collegiate Classic (8k) in third place with a time of 25:13.6. Kipkemboi earned the SWAC Men's Runner of the Year and spot on the All-SWAC First Team.
 
            Kipngetich's role on the Braves men's cross-country team was similar to Gallegos for the women as he was a pace setter. He finished in sixth place at the SWAC Championship with a time of 27:33.4 and was named to the All- SWAC Second Team. At the Nicholls Invitational, the transfer junior finished the meet in third place with a time of 20:53.5. 
 
            The meet will be held at Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville as the University of Florida will be the host. The women will run at 8:30 a.m. with the men's race following at 9:30 a.m.
