BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Stellah Kiptui earned three medals at the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Championships as the Alcorn State women's track and field team placed ninth and the men's team finished 11th.
Kiptui, a native of Kabarnet, Kenya, achieved gold in the 3000m run and 5000m run, setting personal indoor records in both events. She completed the 3000m in 10:03.75 and the 5000m in 17:48.99. Kiptui silvered in the one-mile run at 5:06.42 for her third medal of the meet.
Other scorers for the women's team include Americus Knight and Qua'Neshia Hamilton. Hamilton placed sixth in the women's triple jump, leaping for 11.63m, and Knight finished eighth in the women's high jump with a height of 1.51m.
On the men's side, Kiion Smith scored for the Alcorn in the weight throw, and Marciano Taylor garnered points in the 800m. Smith, a Rolling Fork, Miss. native, finished fifth with a throw of 16.14m, and Taylor, from Memphis, Tenn., finished eighth with a personal record and school record of 1:56.31. The Braves 4x400m also had a great showing. Arrington Robinson, Johnny Holloway, III, Terrell White, and Elijah Moncure finished fifth with a time of 3:17.01 to break the Alcorn school record.
The women's 2023 SWAC Indoor Championship winner was Alabama State, with 149 points. Prairie View finished second with 127, and Texas Southern finished third with 52.5. The Lady Braves were ninth with 33.5 points.
Alabama State also won the men's championship with 123 points. Jackson State finished second with 120 points, and Texas Southern was third with 95. The Braves finished 11th with nine.
The Alcorn State men's and women's track and field teams will begin the outdoor season on Saturday, March 4, when they compete in the Mississippi College Season Opener. The one-day event will be held at the James E. Parkman Track in Clinton, Miss.
