MONROE, La. – The Alcorn State University men's and women's track and field team traveled to Monroe, La., to participate in the 2023 Warhawk Classic hosted by ULM. The two-day event began on Friday, April 21 and concluded on Saturday, April 22. At the meet, the Braves collected two golds, nine medals total, and 11 personal records were recorded.
Stellah Kiptui grabbed the Lady Braves only gold medal of the competition. The sophomore on the track placed first in the women's 800-meter with a time of 2:18.95.
On the men's side, Kelvin Kipkemboi collected a first place finished for Alcorn. He reached gold in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:07.38.
The women's team collected five more medals at the Warhawk Classic. Jasmine Ward and Jade Ceasar finished second and third in the 400-meter run, respectively. Ward ran a personal best of 56.57 as Ceasar completed the race with a time of 1:05.03.
Americus Knight reached silver in the women's high jump. She reached a personal record of 1.60m (5'3") for the second-place finish.
In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Akili Pleas-Carnie finished in third place. She ran the race with a time of 1:06.22. She also had a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdle with a time of 14.96.
Finally, the women's 4x100 relay team grabbed bronze. The team consisting of
Khiah Williams, Mckenzie Patterson,
De'Aisha Davis, and Kaylin White finished with a time of 49.26.
Two more medals were won on the men's team.
Marciano Taylor crossed the finish line in third place during the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.04, and Charles Nnantah, Jr. pr'd in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.63 for a second-place finish.
The Lady Braves had five other personal records in Monroe. Tekysa Thompson finished 10
th place in the 100-meter at 12.55 and Mckenzie Patterson finished 17
th at 12.94.
Vivian Lugo placed 14
th in the women's 1500-meter with a time of 6:01.72 and Jailyn Ward landed right behind her in 15
th place with a time of 6:40.83.
Finally, Jaidyn Matheu threw from 2.71m (8'10.75") in the shotput to place 17
th.
The men's team had three other collegiate personal best.
Elijah Moncure finished 17
th in the men's 100-meter with a time of 11.31, Chemar McGhee finished sixth in the 800-meter at 1:59.80, and Kiion Smith threw for 13.39 m (43'11.25") in the men's shot put to take eighth place.
The Alcorn State track and field teams will be in Starkville, Miss., next weekend to participate in the Maroon and White Invite hosted by Mississippi State University on Saturday, April 29.
