PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Alcorn State men's and women's track and field teams both finished ninth at the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The three-day event was held at Prairie View A&M University Track Complex from Thursday, May 4 – Saturday, May 6.
The Lady Braves saw two gold medals, one silver, and one bronze, during their championship run. They also recorded six personal records and three season bests.
Senior runner Stellah Kiptui was the top performer for the Lady Braves as she took second place in the women's 1500m with a season-best of 4:40.91 and first place in the 10,000m with 39:01.40.
Khiah Williams also snagged first place for Alcorn and recorded a new personal record in the women's long jump. She took the gold with a distance of 6.27m.
Taking a bronze, Americus Knight reached a personal best of 1.67 m in the high jump to take third place.
Kaylin White finished second in the women's heptathlon high jump with a 1.58m. She also took fifth place in the heptathlon shot put, throwing 10.25m.
Akili Pleas-Carnie saw a season-best in the preliminaries of the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.92.
Kimorla Mushette and Mckenzie Patterson both recorded personal best in the 200m preliminaries. Mushette finished with a time of 25.81, and Patterson finished in 25.88. Patterson also had a personal record in the 400m preliminaries with a time of 58.12.
Vivian Lugo pr'd in the 1500m preliminaries, completing the run in 6:00.49.
Jaidyn Matheu reached a personal record of 4.78m in the shot put.
And finally, De'Ashia Davis had a season-best of 5.09m in the long jump.
The Braves took one bronze medal at the event. Kelvin Kipkemboi finished third in the 3000m steeple chase at 9:55.36.
Kiion Smith finished fifth in the discus throw with a personal best of 45.65m and 13th in the shot put with a personal record of 13.64m.
Marciano Taylor finished sixth in the 800m with a personal record of 1:54.52 and saw a personal record of 1:52.47 in the 800m preliminary run.
Two Braves saw improvement in the 100m preliminary sprint. Amiri Franklin had a season-best of 11.22, and Connor Kees recorded a new personal record at 11.68.
J'vontae Noel had a season-best of 15.00 in the men's 110m hurdles prelims.
Jeremiah Wingate had a personal record of 10.29.20 in the 3000m steeple chase.
