Lady Braves Face Texas Southern in SWAC Home Opener on Jan. 20

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University women's basketball returns to Davey L. Whitney Complex on Saturday, Jan. 20 after a long road stint for their first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) home contest. The Lady Braves will go head-to-head with Texas Southern University at 1 p.m.

    The Lady Braves are 3-11, overall, and 1-2 in league play. Alcorn looks to capitalize off the momentum of their first conference win over Alabama State University on Jan. 13. ASU defeated the Hornets, 49-42, on the road. Destiny Brown earned the SWAC Player of the Week award for her double-double performance of 21 points and 16 rebounds while recording seven blocks and four steals in the victory. Zy'Nyia White put up 11 points and four rebounds while Nykia Cheatham snagged eight rebounds. The team must repeat this feat against the Tigers to walk away with the win.

     This season, White leads the team in scoring averaging 11.9 points. Brown and Cheatham are neck at neck in rebounds averaging 7 and 6.9 boards, respectively.

    Texas Southern (3-12, 2-2 SWAC) enters the contest after a one-point loss to Mississippi Valley State University, 69-70. Nya Harmon was the leader the Tigers in that performance with 16 points and six rebounds. Taniya Lawson and Daeja Holmes lead the team in scoring averaging 11.5 and 11 points, respectively. Holmes and Jaida Belton are the leading rebounders averaging 5.9 and 5.3 rebounds, respectively.
