Women’s Indoor T&F Run at Samford January Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alcorn State University women's indoor track and field competed in the 2024 Samford January Invitational on Jan. 19. The Lady Braves competed against schools like the University of Alabama, Northwestern State University and the University of South Alabama in the all-day affair.

    Brianna Wilson and Taliya Spurlock represented Alcorn in the women's 60-meter dash. Wilson finished with a time of 7.88 seconds while Spurlock finished with a time of 7.98 seconds. Milan Fields of Alabama took first place with a time of 7.34 seconds while Sileena Farrell of Northwestern State came in second place with a time of 7.54 seconds. Latiana Acker of South Alabama came in third place with a time of 7.62 seconds.

    In the women's 200 meter run, Jasmine Ward and Tionna Harris competed for ASU. Ward finished with a time of 26.76 while Harris finished with a time of 27.83. Northwestern State's Sanaria Butler won first place with a time of 24.10 while her teammate Maygan Shaw came in second with a time of 24.38. Ariike Elijah of Alabama finished in third place with a time of 24.40.

    Shy'Kerria Curtis and Jade Ceasar ran for ASU in the women's 400 meter run. Curtis finished with a time of 1:04.90 and Ceasar finished with a time of 1:08.31. Samari Finney of Northwestern claimed first place with a time of 57.18. Jackson State University's Jiya Clayton came in second place with a time of 57.23. Karla Harrison of McNeese State University came in third place with a time of 57.31.

    In the women's mile run, Teresa Gallegos, Joyce Kiptum and Samouya Nevers ran for the Lady Braves. Gallegos finished with a time of 5:43.12 while Kiptum crossed the finish line with a time of 6:26.71. Nevers ended the race with a time of 6:28.05. First place was claimed by Alabama's Doris Lemnyole with a time of 4:40.08. Unattached runner, Brenda Gitahi, came in second with a time of 4:40.23. Katie Keller of Samford University was third with a time of 4:48.53.

    Alcorn (Ward, Wilson, Spurlock, Curtis) claimed fourth place in the women's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:14.36. Northwestern State won first place in the event with a time of 3:42.10. University of Louisiana came in second place with a time of 3:48.90. McNeese was third place with a time of 3:51.98.

    De'Aisha Davis competed in the women's long jump for ASU and ended the day with a jump of 5.22 meters (17' 1.5"). Ellison Chadwick of Samford won the event with a jump of 5.90 meters (19' 4.25"). Alimot Alowonle of the University of New Orleans came in second place with a jump of 5.59 meters (18' 4.25"). Morgan Talley, an unattached jumper from McNeese State, finished in third place with a jump of 5.54 meters (18' 2.25").

    In the women's shot put, Destinee Lanham and Gabrielle Christopher represented the Lady Braves. Lanham finished the day with a throw of 9.25 meters (30' 4.25") while Christopher ended with a throw of 8.06 meters (26' 5.5"). Alabama's MyeJoi Williams won the event with a throw of 17.21 meters (56' 5.75"). Biniosa Ezukuse of Troy University came in second with a throw of 15.72 meters (51' 7"). Williams' teammate, Amani Heaven, finished in third place with a throw of 15.65 meters (51' 4.25").
