Lady Braves Open SWAC Play on Jan. 6 in Jackson

LORMAN, Miss. – Coach Nate Kilbert and the Alcorn State University Lady Braves basketball team (2-9) will travel to Jackson, Miss. on Saturday, Jan. 6 to face Jackson State University to open the Southwestern Athletic Conference portion of the 2023-24 campaign.

    ASU wants to bounce back from a tough 37-76 loss to the University of Mississippi on Dec. 30. Zy'Nyia White was the leader for the Lady Braves in that contest with 13 points and four rebounds. She was followed by Nakia Cheatham with 10 points and seven rebounds. Both players will need to be in concert as White is averaging 10.4 points per game and Cheatham keeps the offense alive averaging seven rebounds. Tyginae Wright moves the ball with three assists per game.

    Alcorn will contend with the Tigers (5-6) who suffered a loss from the University of Texas on Dec. 27, 52-97. JSU was led by Andriana Avent with 11 points, and she was followed by Miya Crump and Zakiya Mahoney with 10 points each. Angel Jackson tallied a team high eight rebounds.

    The Lady Braves will have to shutdown scorers like Crump and the Tigers' current scoring leader Ti'lan Boler, averaging 10.5 points per game. Cheatham and Brown will be dueling with Angel Jackson under the basketball for rebounds as she leads Jackson averaging 6.2 boards per game.
