Lady Braves Gear Up for Bulldogs on Thursday

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University women's basketball (2-10, 0-1 SWAC) head to Huntsville, Ala. to face Alabama A&M University on Thursday evening at 5 p.m.

    The Lady Braves are on the hunt for their first league win of the season after a 46-74 loss to Jackson State University on Jan. 6. ASU was led by Zy'Nyia White with an impressive 21 point and team-high nine rebounds. Nia McCalphia kept the ball moving with four assists and three steals. Scorers such as White and Nakia Cheatham will need hot hands to gain the upper hand against AAMU.

    Currently, White leads the Lady Braves in scoring averaging 11.3 points per game while Cheatham leads the team in rebounds averaging 6.9 boards. Tyginae Wright keeps Alcorn's offense moving with 2.9 assists per game.

    Alabama A&M (6-8, 1-1 SWAC) enters the game after a win over Mississippi Valley State University on Monday, 83-67. The Bulldogs finished the game with four players with double-digit point totals. Victoria Dixon scored 21 points while Amiah Simmons dropped 16 points. Darian Burgin accounted for 15 points and four rebounds. Alisha Wilson tallied a double-double of 14 points and a game-high 24 rebounds. ASU's defense will have to shutdown Simmons as she is a key offensive threat and contend with passers such as Burgin and Kayla Turner.

    Simmons leads AAMU in scoring with 14.7 points and 2.6 assists per game. Cheatham will have to duel with Wilson under the basket for rebounds as she is averaging 8.4 boards per game. Burgin and Turner run Alabama A&M's offense averaging 2.8 assists per game.
