Davis Finishes Eight in Long Jump, Lady Braves Compete in Jaguar Invitational

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University women's indoor track and field traveled to Birmingham, Ala. over the weekend to compete in the University of South Alabama Jaguar Invitational. De'Aisha Davis finished in the top 10 of the women's long jump for the Lady Braves. ASU competed against schools such as the University of Louisiana, Lee University (Tenn.), and the University of Memphis.

    Davis competed in the women's long jump and finished in eighth place with a jump of 5.64 meters (18' 6"). Americus Knight also jumped for Alcorn finished with 4.87 meters (15' 11.75"). Shatara Johnson of the Grambling State University won the event with a jump of 5.90 meters (19' 4.25"). Shemia Odaine of the University of Louisiana came in second with 5.81 meters (19' 0.75"). In third place, Ellison Chadwick from Samford University with 5.74 meters (18' 10").

    In the women's 60-meter dash, Brianna Wilson and Taliya Spurlock ran for ASU. Wilson finished with a time of 7.96 seconds while Spurlock finished with a time of 8.11 seconds. La'Nica Locker of Hinds Community College came in first place with a time of 7.46 seconds. Printassia Johnson of Life University was second with a time of 7.47 seconds and Latiana Acker, University of South Alabama, was third with a time of 7.59 seconds.

    Wilson and Spurlock competed alongside Jasmine Ward and Tionna Harris in the women's 200-meter run. Wilson finished with a time of 25.70 seconds while Spurlock finished with a time of 26.33 seconds. Ward crossed the finish line in 26.92 seconds and Harris crossed in 27.91 seconds. Memphis' Jadaja Baxter finished in first place with 24.49 seconds while South Alabama's Acker was second with 24.58 seconds. Rounding out the top three was Locker (Hinds CC) with a time of 24.59 seconds.

    Brianna Ward, Jade Ceasar, and Sky'Kerria Curtis competed for Alcorn in the women's 400-meter run. Ward finished with a time of 59.87 seconds while Ceasar crossed the finish line at 1:04.24. Curtis crossed the finish line in 1:08.28. Praise Idamadudu of Cumberland University (Tenn.) claimed top honors with a time of 54.79 seconds. Troy University's Kasia Cooper came in second with a time of 56.61 seconds. Ariyonna Jones of Clayton State University came in third with a time of 56.77 seconds.

    Samouya Nevers ran for ASU in the women's mile run and finished with a time of 6:22.54. Louisiana's Haley Salsbury won first place with a time of 5:05.76 while Charleen Elizondo, South Alabama, came in second place with a time of 5:08.75. In third place, Ashlynn Iliff of Lee with a time of 5:11.48.

    In the women's 3000-meter run, Teresa Gallegos finished with a time of 11:06.04 and Joyce Kiptum crossed the finish line in 12:23.31. Lee's Paige Patterson was in first place with a time of 10:07.26. Bella Edwards of Samford came in second place with a time of 10:13.44. Patterson's teammate, Katie Krueger finished in third place with a time of 10:16.37.

    Ward, Knight, Harris, and Wilson competed for the Lady Braves in the women's 4x400 meter relay and finished with a time of 4:00.33. South Alabama (A) took first place with a time of 3:50.84 while Samford (A) was second with a time of 3:51.46. Memphis finished in third place with a time of 3:51.92.

    Knight also competed in the women's high jump and finished with a flight of 1.54 meters (5' 0.5"). Kennedy Washington of Louisiana finished in first place with a flight of 1.69 meters (5' 6.5"). Jamie Richardson of Grambling was second place with a flight of 1.69 meters (5' 6.5"). Samford's Grace Gamboa finished in third place with a flight of 1.69 meters (5' 6.5").

    Alcorn will be back in competition on Friday, Feb. 9 in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
