Gallegos Earns Top Honors, Lady Braves Compete at Louisiana Tech Jim Mize Invitational

RUSTON, La. – Alcorn State University women's track and field team traveled to Louisiana Tech University and competed in the Jim Mize Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Braves ran against the University of New Orleans (UNO), Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SE Okla.), and Hinds Community College. Teresa Gallegos and De'Asha Davis found their way to the top of their respective events.

Gallegos earned first place in the 3,000-meter run with 11:03.09. Rebecca Ouebedeaux (La. Tech) came in second place with 11:05.08 and Arden Kesterson (SE Okla.) finished in third place with 11:19.43.

Davis competed in the long jump and finished in fifth place with a flight of 5.32 meters (17' 5.5"). Kaylin White also competed and finished with a flight of 4.76 meters (15' 7.5"). A'reil Williams (La. Tech) took first place with 6.05 meters (19' 10.25") while teammate, DaLoria Boone came in second place with 5.77 meters (18' 11.25"). Shamaya Joiner of Grambling State University finished in third place with 5.74 meters (18' 10").

Gallegos, Shaereen Cheruiyot, and Joyce Kiptum ran in the 1,500-meter run for Alcorn. Gallegos finished in sixth place with 5:09.76. Cheruiyot came in seventh place with 5:13.55. Kiptum crossed the finish line in 5:43.03. Kris-Ann Plummer of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff claimed first place with 4:51.53. Michelle Folk (UNO) finished in second place with 5:02.18 while Plummers' teammate, Abigail Pinnock, crossed the finish line in 5:02.25.

Tekysa Thompson and Kadijah Ramsey ran in the 100-meters. Thompson finished in 12.69 seconds and Ramsey finished in 12.90 seconds. Shatayla Dorsett (La. Tech) took first place with 11.73 seconds and teammate, Sara Kouyate, came in second place with 11.99 seconds. Kyla Blockett (GSU) claimed third place with 12.01 seconds.

Tionna Harris and Brianna Wilson competed in the 400-meter run. Harris finished in 59.53 seconds and Wilson finished in 1:01.21. Faith Tarver (La. Tech) came in first place with 55.17 seconds, while teammate, Jamara Patterson, finished in second place in 55.20 seconds. Twyshanna Huie (HCC) took third place in 56.15 seconds.

Samouya Nevers ran in the 800-meter run and finished in 2:41.60. Alexandra Weir (UNO) took first place with 2:12.71. Adriel Austin (HCC) claimed second place with
2:20.03. Weir's teammate, Oxana Bonjourn-Giros finished in third place with 2:20.32.

Alcorn's 4x400 meter team (Harris, Wilson, McKenzie Patterson, Jasmine Ward) finished in 4:02.94. Louisiana Tech (A) and (B) teams took first and second place in 3:42.85 and 3:48.76, respectively. HCC came in third place in 3:49.25.

White competed in the shot-put event and finished with 9.78 meters (32' 1"). Lillian Dudley of Jackson State University came in first place with 14.26 meters (46' 9.5"). Macayla Needham (SE Okla.) finished in second place with 13.74 meters (45' 1"). Cornelia Watts (UAPB) took third place with 13.19 meters (43' 3.25").

Alcorn will hit the track again in the Ole Miss Classic hosted by the University of Mississippi from March 22-24 in Oxford, Miss.
