BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alcorn State University men's and women's track and field teams delivered a strong start at the 2025 SWAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, securing multiple top-10 finishes on Saturday, February 22, at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Braves showcased their talent across both track and field events, setting the stage for an exciting final day of competition.
Men's Highlights
Freshman Derrick Williams continued his impressive indoor season with a strong showing in the men's 60-meter dash, advancing to the finals after posting a preliminary time of 6.78 seconds, which placed him fourth overall heading into the championship race. Williams also competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing ninth overall in 21.57 seconds.
In the men's 400-meter dash, senior
Trellas Forrest delivered a standout performance, securing a third-place finish with a time of 47.89 seconds, positioning himself as a podium contender in the finals. Sophomore Alocias Kipngetich also put forth a strong effort in the men's 800-meter run, earning a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:55.31.
In the men's triple jump,
Jeremiah Saintil landed a sixth-place finish with a best mark of 14.74 meters (48-4.5 ft.), adding valuable points to the Braves' overall team standings.
Women's Highlights
On the track, freshman T'La Dewitt posted an 11th-place finish in the women's 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 57.41 seconds, while sophomore
Brianna Wilson placed 17th in 58.51 seconds.
Brianna Wilson also competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing 16th overall with a time of 25.13 seconds, while
Shy'Kerria Curtis followed in 28th place at 26.55 seconds.
In the women's 60-meter dash,
Taliya Spurlock and
Brianna Wilson represented Alcorn well, with Spurlock placing 18th in 7.80 seconds and Wilson finishing 24th in 7.88 seconds.
Senior
Teresa Gallegos was a key performer in the distance events, finishing seventh in the women's mile run with a time of 5:20.75, and later placing fifth in the 3,000-meter run, clocking 10:43.48.
In the women's long jump, junior
Kaylin White finished 24th with a jump of 5.17 meters (16-11.50 ft.), while Mercedes Sewell and Lauryn Lewis placed 26th and 27th, respectively.
Alcorn's throwers were also in action in the women's weight throw, with
Destinee Lanham finishing 19th and Kiersten Buckley placing 20th.
