LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University has announced the addition of
John Westbrook as the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations.

John is a professional who understands the tradition of HBCU athletics, and we look forward to the positive impact he will make within our department."
Westbrook joins the Braves after serving as the Director of Operations with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) since the fall of 2023, where he managed the day-to-day operational functions of the league office. His appointment at Alcorn marks a return to the campus setting, where he has built an accomplished career in athletics administration, communications, and operations.
Before rejoining the SWAC, Westbrook worked in transportation operations with Ashley Furniture Corporation. He previously served as the Conference Office's Director of Strategic Communications after a successful tenure at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). At ECSU, Westbrook directed communications for all sports, led marketing efforts, and secured over $200,000 in sponsorships, including partnerships with Chick-fil-A of Elizabeth City and Albemarle Plantation Sounds Golf Links. He also orchestrated the redesign of the department's official website, which averaged more than 100,000-page hits within its first two months.
Westbrook's innovative leadership extended to launching live video and audio streaming for ECSU athletics while enhancing the department's social media presence. In addition, he served as Head Coach of ECSU's golf program, guiding the Vikings to a fifth-place conference finish in 2018, and was named ECSU Coach of the Year.
His prior career stops include Virginia State University, where he served as Sports Information Director, and Jackson State University, where he worked in media relations covering a wide range of sports. He also gained valuable experience in media relations at Alabama State University, assisting with multiple programs and serving as the official statistician for conference championships.
A native of Houston, Miss., Westbrook began his career in 2006 in Jackson State's sports information department. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing from Jackson State University and is an active member of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), BC-SIDA (Black College Sports Information Directors of America), and NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics).
