LORMAN, Miss. — The Alcorn State women's basketball team returns to the road Thursday night for a key Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup at Alabama State. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, as the Lady Braves look to build on their early league success.
Alcorn enters the contest with a 4–8 overall record and a 1–0 mark in SWAC play after opening conference action with a road victory. The Lady Braves have shown balance on both ends of the floor, averaging 53.9 points per game while continuing to emphasize defensive pressure and rebounding fundamentals.
Senior guard
Nakia Cheatham continues to lead the way offensively, averaging 13.2 points per game while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from three-point range. Cheatham also contributes 5.3 rebounds per game and leads the team in steals, setting the tone on both ends of the floor.
Kiarra Henderson has been a steady presence in the backcourt, averaging 8.9 points per contest while leading the team with 51 assists. Henderson's ability to control tempo and distribute has been key as Alcorn continues to grow into conference play.
On the perimeter, Maya Claytor has emerged as one of the Lady Braves' top shooting threats, knocking down 27 three-pointers while shooting nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc.
Lauren Nelson adds versatility, averaging 6.1 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, while providing valuable minutes on both ends of the floor.
The matchup with Alabama State Hornets marks another important road test for Alcorn as it continues to establish its identity in SWAC play.
