Volleyball to Open Season this Sunday Against Prairie View A&M

LORMAN, Miss. – After waiting a week to open the season, the Alcorn State University volleyball team will now begin the 2021 spring season this Sunday at home against Prairie View A&M beginning at 2 p.m. inside Davey L. Whitney Complex.

The Lady Braves were scheduled to also play Texas Southern on Monday, but that match has been postponed.

Alcorn enters the season coming off of last year's 7-23 overall record and 3-15 mark in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Returner Jasmine Chambers, selected to the Preseason All-SWAC Team, led the Lady Braves in setting up the offense a season ago with 543 assists at setter. Jeda Curry is back and was selected to the Preseason All-SWAC Team after posting 155 kills, good for second on the team and also had 108 digs. Fiapaipai Iosia led the team in digs and returns this season after posting 291 digs. Chambers was second in digs with 179. Simone Barren led the team in blocks with 64 and returns this season.

The Lady Braves will face the preseason pick to win the conference in Prairie View A&M on Sunday. The Lady Panthers are off to a 3-0 start to the season picking up a non-conference five-set win over Incarnate Word to open the campaign on Jan. 22. They opened SWAC play last week defeating Grambling State in five sets and a sweep of UAPB. Melanie Arenas leads the team in kills with 28, followed by 26 from Victoria Pearson and 23 from Tamaira Armstrong. Jakarta Hope and Miriam Cardoner run the offense with Hope dishing out 49 assists to 48 for Cardoner. Skyla Childs has a team-best 54 digs and Pearson has sent back 11 blocks.

Following the match against Prairie View A&M, the Lady Braves will then hit the road on Feb. 7 at Mississippi Valley State and on Feb. 8 at Jackson State.
