LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State Men's and Women's Cross Country opens the 2022 season this weekend, as the Braves travel to Clinton, Mississippi to compete in The Opener hosted by Mississippi College at Choctaw Trails. The event takes place Friday, Sept. 2, with the women's event beginning at 5:30 p.m., and the men's race beginning at 6 p.m.
Under the direction of
Jimmy Joseph, the 2021 Women's Cross Country Championships Most Valuable Coach, both the Alcorn State Men's and Women's Cross Country squads will look to begin the season strong in front of a relatively home crowd in the Jackson, Mississippi suburb of Clinton.
On the women's side, the reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Champion Braves return a number of letterwinners from last year's title-winning campaign.
Back for the Purple and Gold are four letterwinners in all, including
Stellah Kiptui (Kabarnet, Kenya) and
Runelda Jackson (Belle Glade, Fla.). Also returning to the fold is
Samouya Nevers (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), joined by Akili Pleas-Came (Milwaukee, Wis.). Newcomer
Neshae Sanders enters the mix for the Braves from nearby Port Gibson, Mississippi.
Meanwhile, for the men, they also return four letterwinners from a season ago.
Returning to Lorman for the Purple and Gold is sophomore
Elijah Anderson (Tacoma, Wash.), as well as classmate
David Smith (Jackson, Miss.). A pair of additional sophomores return to Joseph's guidance in the form of
Marciano Taylor (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Jeremiah Wingate (Las Vegas, Nev.).
Other teams joining Alcorn in the Division I ranks for this year's event include SWAC members Grambling State, Jackson State and Southern, along with Western Athletic Conference (WAC) member Louisiana-Monroe.
As for Southern, they will be competing only in the men's race.
