CLINTON, Miss. –
Stellah Kiptui grabbed first place and
Runelda Jackson secured third on Friday, helping Alcorn State Women's Cross Country tally a pair of top three finishes at The Opener hosted by Mississippi College at Choctaw Trails. On the men's side, the Braves took eighth in the season-opening event, while the women's race was not scored as a team event.
Kiptui, a sophomore from Kabarnet, Kenya, turned in a winning time of 18:06.70, allowing her to pick up top individual accolades at this year's event. As a team, the women's event was only scored as individuals, which was ran as a 5K race.
Meanwhile, Alcorn classmate
Runelda Jackson, a native of Belle Glade, Florida, scored a third place time of 18:36.20 – almost a full minute ahead of fourth place participant Jazmin Hernandez of host Mississippi College.
Also competing for the Braves was
Samouya Nevers from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, as the sophomore collected a finishing time of 22:43.00 in her first race of the 2022 season. Rounding out the participants for the Braves was sophomore
Akili Pleas-Carne of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with the Rufus King High product finishing the race with a time of 23:06.70.
On the men's side, Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Jimmy Joseph saw his team produce an eighth place finish to open its 2022 account.
Sophomore transfer
Bethwell Limo led the charge for the Alcorn State Men's Cross Country team in his first race as a Brave, as he crossed the finish line in a time of 18:05.27 to lead all Alcorn scorers. Behind Limo was returning sophomore
Jeremiah Wingate (18:17.61) in 53rd, respectfully.
Competing in his own back yard, in essence, during the event, Jackson, Mississippi native and sophomore
David Smith posted a finishing time of 18:50.72, allowing him to cross 66th in the event. Alcorn sophomore
Marciano Taylor took 70th overall in scoring with a time of 19:15.25. And it was
Chemar McGhee (20:26.64) crossing 83rd to round out the scoring for the Braves.
In the men's event, Hunter Kurz from host Mississippi College took top individual honors with a time of 15:25.14 on the day.
For Alcorn, both the men and women will return to the cross country course again on Friday, Sept. 16, when the Purple and Gold travel to participate in the North Alabama Invitational being held at John Hunt Cross Country Course in Huntsville, Alabama.
