Howard Tabbed SWAC Football Newcomer of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alcorn State Football student-athlete Jarveon Howard has been named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Newcomer of the Week for the period of Sept. 5-11, 2022, announced by the league on Monday, Sept. 5, from its home office in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
Howard, a 5-10, 200-pound redshirt senior from Columbia, Mississippi, transferred into the Alcorn State program during the summer. He arrived to the Lorman, Mississippi campus from Syracuse University.
 
In his debut for the Braves, the East Marion High alum tallied a game-high 199 yards on the ground in what was a near-upset of 10th-ranked Stephen F. Austin. Additionally, the former Syracuse running back had a 73-yard rushing score just before the half that extended the Alcorn lead at 24-10 going into halftime. Howard also contributed one reception out of the backfield for five yards.
 
Alcorn gets back to the field again next weekend when the Braves travel to New Orleans, Louisiana for a meeting against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent Tulane on Sept. 10. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., with the game scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+.
 
Other key performers for the SWAC this week included Jackson State's Shedeur Sanders being named the league's Offensive Player of the Week; Grambling State's Lewis Matthews picking up the league's Defensive Player of the Week award; and Arkansas Pine-Bluff's Maurice Lloyd was tabbed SWAC Specialist of the Week.
