Registration Form
LORMAN, Miss. - The Alcorn State University cheerleading program will be looking to select its roster for the upcoming 2023-24 athletic season, with tryouts stretching from April 19 through May 5 throughout three phases of evaluation.
The tryouts will be held over a three-phase "invitation to tryout" process. The process is designed for candidates to show their versatility, exemplary skill, and workmanship.
The first thing prospective cheerleaders must do is complete the digital registration form, which can also be found on alcornsports.com/sports/cheer and any Alcorn Cheerleading social media platform.
The form must be submitted by April 19. The requirements for trying out include a 2.5 GPA (current students | transfers), unofficial transcripts (current students | transfers), an acceptance letter upon the date of tryouts (transfers | incoming freshmen), a physical clearance form, and sickle cell test results (both within the last six months) plus a negative COVID-19 test within five days of the first physical tryout date.
There will also be a $45 non-refundable tryout application fee that must be submitted HERE by selecting donation, inserting the amount, and selecting "Spirit Team (Cheerleaders)" from the drop-down menu. Head Coach Asia Thomas asks all participants to submit a virtual copy of their receipt along with their Phase I submissions and encourages printing a physical copy of the donation receipt to present upon arrival to the Phase III portion of the tryouts if chosen.
Phase I (April 19)
The first phase of the tryout will be a video audition submitted to alcorncheerleadingtryouts@gmail.com, with the video having to include one cheer, tumbling (standing and running), and stunts (all-girl or coed). Additional details, including the specific stunting skills required for the video, are listed within the application. Candidates who advance to phase two will be informed via email invitation following the review of their video.
Phase II (April 22)
Phase two will consist of material that each candidate will learn from videos provided by a coach-selected demo, during which the level of each candidate's skills and talents and ability to grasp the Alcorn Cheer style will be evaluated. The material will include two cheers and a dance (HBCU / collegiate style).
Phase III (May 5 – 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. | May 6 - 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
The third and final phase will be an actual physical tryout to be judged by a selection team. Candidates will perform in their selected stunt groups of four (all-girl) or two (coed). During this phase, prospective cheerleaders will perform all material taught in phase 2, stunts with their selected group, tumbling (running and standing), and jumps.
There are no height or weight restrictions. Both males and females are encouraged to try out.
Alcorn cheerleaders begin fall practices in early August. They cheer at football, volleyball, and basketball games, in addition to athletic department events and campus and community activities
throughout the year.
The primary role of the Alcorn State University Cheerleading Program is to promote crowd involvement at athletic events and appearances while being ambassadors for the institution.
