Davis Finishes Fourth in Long Jump, Alcorn Women Compete at Samford Indoor Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alcorn State University women's indoor track & field took their talents back to the Birmingham Crossplex for the Samford Indoor Open hosted by Samford University on Jan. 20. The Lady Braves hit the track against schools like the University of Alabama-Huntsville, William Carey University, the University of Southeast Louisiana, and Meridian Community College.

    De'Aisha Davis competed for Alcorn in the women's long jump. Davis finished in fourth place with a flight of 5.31 meters (17' 5.25"). Fegor Clifford of William Carey finished with a flight of 5.43 meters (17' 9.75"). Clifford's teammate, Tyeese Smith, took second place with a flight of 5.35 meters (17' 6.75"). Southeast Louisiana's Jordyn Taylor came in third place with a flight of 5.31 meters (17' 5.25"). 

    In the women's 60-meter dash, Kadijah Ramsey ran for Alcorn and finished the race with a time of 8.31 seconds. Immaculate Danial of Southeastern Louisiana won the event with a time of 7.74 seconds. Janae Hilliard of Alabama-Huntsville came in second place with a time of 7.90 seconds. Kenadi Acker of Reinhardt University finished in third place with a time of 7.96 seconds.

    ASU had five runners compete in the women's 200-meter run. Brianna Wilson placed ninth with a time of 25.61 seconds. Taliya Spurlock finished with a time of 26.31 seconds while Jasmine Ward crossed the finish line with a time of 26.32 seconds. Shy'Kerria Curtis finished the race with a time of 27.87 seconds. Tionna Harris rounded out Alcorn's event performance with a time of 28.07 seconds. Nauti'ka Robinson of Alabama State University claimed the event with a time of 24.94. Texas Southern University's Erica Grant came in second place with a time of 25.26. Machaeda Linton of William Carey placed third with a time of 25.26.

    Jade Ceasar ran for the Lady Braves in the women's 800-meter run. She finished the race with a time of 3:03.05. Privilege Chikara of Meridian CC won the race with a time of 2:15.26. William Carey teammates, Maria Tirado, and Maria Simancas took second and third place with times of 2:16.24 and 2:17.45, respectively.

    In the women's 3000-meter run, Teresa Gallegos and Joyce Kiptum ran for ASU. Gallegos finished with a time of 11:17.07 while Kiptum crossed the finish line with a time of 12:48.76. Macie Cash of Ouachita Baptist University took first place with a time of 10:16.93. Abby Weist of Alabama-Huntsville claimed second place with a time of 10:31.48. Natalie Warner of the University of Montevallo finished in third place with a time of 10:37.85.

    Destinee Lanham and Gabrielle Christopher represented Alcorn in the women's shot put. Lanham ended the day with a throw of 9.63 meters (31' 7.25") while Christopher finished with a throw of 8.59 meters (28' 2.25"). Birthe' Franck-Petersen of the University of Alabama – Birmingham came in first place with a 13.19 meter (43' 3.25"). University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Cornelia Watts came in second place with a throw of 13.00 meters (42' 8"). Watts' teammate, Ariyonna Edmond finished in third place with a throw of 12.00 meters (39' 4.5").

    The Lady Braves will hit the track again on Sunday, Feb. 4 in the Jaguar Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama in Birmingham, Ala. The first race begins at 7:30 a.m.
