SERIES VS. CHICAGO STATE
This will be the first-ever meeting between the Alcorn Braves and Chicago State Cougars.
ABOUT JACK SPINKS – MARINO CASEM STADIUM
Jack Spinks – Marino Casem Stadium is a 22,500-seat multi-purpose stadium in Lorman, Mississippi, which is the home field of the Alcorn State University Braves football team, as well as the women's soccer team. The stadium is surrounded by the campus of Alcorn State University and is adjacent to the Davey Whitney Complex. Opened in 1992, Jack Spinks – Marino Casem Stadium replaced Henderson Stadium. Its name is derived from former Alcorn State Braves football player Jack Spinks. The name was changed to the Jack Spinks – Marino Casem Memorial Stadium in 2011, after then Alcorn State President M. Christopher Brown II stated "Coach Casem helped Alcorn State University Athletics increase both in stature and in reputation to become a nationally recognized university".
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BRAVES
Alcorn's number 10 gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half, while additional goals from
Mikayla Duncan and
Lauren Hill allowed the Braves to register their first-ever win over Centenary (La.), courtesy a 3-1 decision in nonconference women's soccer action at Mayo Field.
Yaisa Reyes, a sophomore forward from Houston, Texas, scored her first goal of the season in the first half on a solo effort from inside the box in the 25th minute, allowing Alcorn the 1-0 advantage. This after the Mayde Creek High product had fired a shot wide of the mark just two minutes prior. Alcorn continued to challenge Centenary goalkeeper Madison Ersoff in the first 45, with
Natacia Ruiz asking the question in the 30th minute. However, the defender's shot was just over the bar, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of the Braves at the break. It would take the Purple and Gold just under two minutes into the second 45 to add to their 1-0 advantage, this time seeing
Mikayla Duncan find the back of the net off the assist from
Jaidyn Matheu. In putting the visitors up 2-0, Duncan secured her first goal of the season, while Matheu recorded her first assist of the 2022 campaign. Despite Ruiz being cautioned in the 73rd minute for Alcorn, the game would be put to bed for the Lorman, Mississippi-based Braves in the 90th minute.
Lauren Hill netted her first goal of the campaign in a devastating counter-attack for the Braves, as freshman forward
Samara Nunn's pass set up Hill – who had gotten past the shoulder of her defender, allowing her a shot from just inside the box down to the keeper's right and into the back of the net for the 3-1 final score line. Alcorn had 16 shots to The Ladies 11 in the game. Five of the Braves shots fell on target, while Centenary had three on target. Both teams had a pair of saves each from their keepers. Lugo collected the win for the Braves in goal, while it was The Ladies' reserve keeper Karlie Delhommer accepting the defeat.
NUNN OF THAT
Freshman forward
Samara Nunn not only sits tied atop the team standings for goals (2), but the Parkersburg, West Virginia native leads the Braves with four assists. No other player has more than assist on the campaign for Alcorn. Additionally, Nunn owns a 69.2 percent shots on-target ratio with nine shots on target in a team-leading 13 attempts.
THE ROAD, YOU SAY?
Prior to Alcorn's 2-1 win over East Texas Baptist (Sept. 4) on the road in Marshall, Texas, the Purple and Gold had never notched a win over an NCAA team in an official away match in school history. Following the win away to Centenary (La.) on Sept. 21, the Braves now have a pair of wins on the road in the same season against NCAA-affiliated institutions for the first time in school history.
ALCORN PREDICTED TO FINISH 8TH IN SWAC
Alcorn Soccer was predicted to finish eighth in the 2022 SWAC Predicted Order of Finish, released by the league office Friday, Aug. 12, from the conference headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama.
AND THEY'RE FRESHMEN?
Currently, it happens to be a pair of freshmen leading the scoring for Alcorn this season, as
Samara Nunn and
Zea Anderson each have tallied two goals apiece. Nunn owns a 90 percent shots on goal average, while Anderson has an 87.5 percent shots on goal mark for the season. Nunn has also provided three assists for the Braves, leading the team in that category as well.
